Gwenview in KDE 4.1

Here is an overview of gwenview in KDE 4.1. Video at the end of this post.

Gwenview start page

When you start gwenview, your're welcomed by the start page. On the left you have the list of KDE's places. It's the same list as in dolphin or the file selection dialog. On the right, the last folders you've visited.

Gwenview - browsing view

When entering a folder, you're in browsing mode. It looks like a file manager. But it's not :)

Gwenview in view mode

You can switch to view mode, in the view menu. In this mode you have only one image displayed. There is a thumbnail bar available at the bottom to ease browsing images in the current folder while being in view mode.

Gwenview fullscreen with top bar

The fullscreen mode has also improved a lot in KDE4.1 : you now have a thumbnail bar at the top of the screen. It's as useful as beautiful : the screeshot speaks by itself.

Gwenview fullscreen settings

You can change what information is shown is the full screen mode thumbnail bar, change slide show interval, and top bar height. All black and slick !

Gwenview settings

And there's a few settings in there. I didn't have to change anything, Changing the mouse wheel behaviour can be useful, as well as the option to enlarge smaller images. Both default settings makes sense and I don't think lots of people with change them.

It's pleasing to use gwenview. No wonder it's now the default image viewer in KDE4.

Here is a video overview of gwenview : youtube, or download.

How to switch between kickoff and classic menu launcher styles

This one has been suggested by Sebastian Kügler. And I agree that it's not obvious how to switch to the classic menu style, even if it's easy.

Available on youtube and can be downloaded.

Panel-less plasma desktop

In this video I try to demo some of the new ways of using your desktop in KDE 4.1.

Some people complain that auto hiding and windows covering panels are two features not yet in KDE4.

I think that there is an alternative. In plasma, panels aren't mandatory. I'm already using this setup on my desktop computer with two screen : one has a traditional layout with a panel with default widgets, the other looks pretty much like what I show in the video. And it's cool.

The video is available on youtube and can be downloaded.

Dolphin in KDE 4.1

Dolphin is the news default file manager in KDE4 series. It's different, but fine tuned towards efficient file management. I think it's great, and it's a lot better in KDE 4.1.

What is there in this video :

There are screenshots available.

The video can be seen on youtube or downloaded.

Welcome to my KDE blog

My laptop desktop

Why another one ?

It all started by demoing KDE endless times to friends. Then making screeshots and small videos. Then, telling myself, why not spending a little bit more time and make it public ?

Here we go. Hope you enjoy. Comments and suggestions welcome !
